Rachel Ellen Ross

January 15, 1929 – July 30, 2022

Rachel Ellen Ross, 93, Cicero, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2022. She was born to the late Ralph and Mary (Johnson) Mayfield on January 15, 1929, in Cicero.

Rachel married Charles Leslie “Chuck” Ross on July 6, 1946. They enjoyed flea markets and antique malls where they collected dolls and pocket watches. Chuck would bring her wildflower bouquets from their property, and she enjoyed bird watching, especially hummingbirds.

Rachel loved her family deeply; always hosting holiday get-togethers where her chicken and noodles became famous. She was a talented seamstress, making clothing for her children and later dolls and teddy bears for her grandchildren.

She had a caring heart, which was evident in the care she provided to the residents of the Cicero Children’s Home, where she worked for 27 years before retiring.

Rachel attended East Union Christian Church and a supporter of the Military through Chuck, who served in the Navy.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years; Chuck Ross, and sisters; Phyllis Dill, Betty Kaiser, and MaryAnn Leach.

Left to cherish the memory of Rachel are her children, Teresa Dunn (Terry), Denny Ross, and Bobbie Shelton (John); 10 grandchildren, Dan Kerfoot (Joy), Todd Kerfoot (Chanda), Jake Kerfoot, Landi Shelton, Zac Shelton, Levi Shelton, Andi Raffanti (Josh), Erin Arnett (Nick), Derek Dunn (Gwen), and Michelle Parsons (Duane); two brothers, Pete Mayfield and David Mayfield (Sharon); 15 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; extended family; and friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Hartley Funeral Home Cicero Chapel, 209 W. Jackson St, Cicero, with burial to follow at Cicero Cemetery.  Rev. Mark Knapp will officiate. A time of visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of the services.
