Dear Fellow Hoosiers:

Nothing is more gratifying to me than solving some problem that has presented itself to me. It could be as simple as unclogging a drain; in my case, I take the challenge on myself first and, if needed, I make a call to a professional.

I recently had the pleasure of finding out that a possible solution has been introduced that could be the answer to something that has bothered me ever since we bought our first home 50 years ago: property taxes.

First, let’s discuss what’s wrong with property taxes.

1 – EVICTION! Yes, that’s right, Hoosiers who OWN their home, or so they thought, get evicted because they fell on hard times and can’t pay the PropTax! Hoosier Hospitality? I don’t think so! THIS MUST STOP!

2 – TAXED ON THE UNREALIZED GAIN of the ever-increasing Assessed Value! When do we get taxed on any other investment? Yeah, when we sell and have a GAIN!

3 – DOUBLE PropTax! Want to downsize after the kids grow up and rent out your current home to boost your retirement income? Your PropTax doubles – in my case $4,800 – to $9,600. Add the insurance and I would have to pass on $1,000 per month to the renter. No wonder rents are so high!

4 – Indiana LEADS THE NATION IN MORTGAGE FORECLOSURES! Let that sink in! If you think PropTaxes are not a factor, please pull your head out of the sand.

5 – SCHOOLS! Okay, I am a grandfather and $3,000 of my $4,800 PropTax bill is for schools. Guess what? I don’t have kids in school. HSE has 1,500 fewer students than six years ago; perhaps HSE could rent out those empty classrooms as storage units instead of a referendum.

FEAR NOT! HELP IS ON ITS WAY!

I drove to Muncie about a month ago to sit in on State Representative JD Prescott’s House Bill 1288 which abolishes property taxes for everyone – homeowners, farmers, business owners and yes, your landlord – and replaces it with a 7 percent tax on services, like a haircut, lawn service, etc. The state bean counters estimate instead of maybe $11 billion collected in PropTax the other option generates $13 to $15 billion in revenue, so everything gets funded with reserves!
