Dear Editor:
I would like to address Indiana Senate Bill 167, which seeks to give parents more of a say in what/how their children are taught at school.
Indiana already has a host of good ways parents can impact what their children are taught. Parents already have the option to homeschool or pick a private school that aligns with their personal beliefs and preferences – even at government expense. Parents are able to run for school board or attend their meetings to make their voices heard.
What we need is a school system where people who meet the arduous educational and certification system already in place in Indiana are listened to. We need schools that can prepare our students to compete in a challenging world.

What we need is a public school system that is laser-focused on learning, critical thinking, and academic excellence. What we have now is a deteriorating education system that invests too much time on feelings and emotions. Kids need all kinds of skills to succeed in a challenging world. Public schools should focus on marketable skills that will enable our country to compete for the jobs of today and tomorrow on a global scale. Parents, churches, and other resources can help kids with their social-emotional learning.
