Noblesville loses a good friend

By FRED SWIFT

It’s always hard to lose a friend, and Noblesville lost a very good friend this week when Ted Rowland passed away. He and his wife, Mary Sue, have been a truly integral part of Noblesville, providing substance and character for longer than many of us can remember.

Working in the printing and newspaper business for nearly half a century, Ted must surely have had printer’s ink running through his veins. Ted and Mary Sue founded Rowland Printing Company in 1972 and later purchased the Noblesville Times, a weekly publication where he had worked while in high school.

Ted was born in Indianapolis, but came to Noblesville at the age of 12. He graduated from Noblesville High School in 1958, then joined the U.S. Navy. Upon his return from service, he and Mary Sue were married.

Ted, who exhibited a great sense of humor and friendly personality, became a successful business owner and prominent member of the community. He assisted his wife in securing election as mayor and acquired the title of “first gentleman” of the city.

Four years ago, Ted and Mary Sue retired, turning over the printing business operations to sons Dane and Dean.

Ted made a major impact on Noblesville. We are going to greatly miss his wit and wisdom.
