Noblesville fire chief to retire in December

Wyant to explore private sector after 25 years with NFD

Fire Chief Greg Wyant announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the year from the Noblesville Fire Department.

Wyant

Wyant began his service with NFD in 1994 and has served as an administrator since 2004. In his tenure with the department, Wyant has been a firefighter, lieutenant, captain, division chief, assistant chief and fire chief. Prior to his employment with NFD, Wyant served six years in the United States Navy.

“The entirety of my adult career has been employment in the public sector. While I have thoroughly enjoyed all of my various roles, I have a strong desire to explore private sector opportunities,” Wyant said.

Mayor John Ditslear appointed Wyant in May 2015 after the retirement of then Chief Ken Gilliam. During his NFD career, Wyant was appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels and reappointed by Governors Mike Pence and Eric Holcomb to serve on the Indiana Board of Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education, where he also served as the board’s chairman for five years. He graduated from the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program and is a graduate and past president of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy.

“Despite the growth of our community, under Chief Wyant’s leadership the NFD response times have never been faster or the quality of service better. Our residents know that when they are in an emergency, the fire department will be there to assist them with the highest professional standards,” said Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear. “Chief Wyant has diligently served the community with devotion, courage and integrity. He will be missed, but we wish him the best of luck as he enters the next stage of his life.”

Wyant said his proudest accomplishment during his career is the research he conducted on cancer risks among firefighters and the resulting initiatives established within the fire industry to help lower the cancer risk among firefighters. His research was published in the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management and led to the creation of safer operating procedures at NFD and other fire departments.

“I am grateful to Mayor Ditslear for giving me the opportunity to lead this department. It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Noblesville. I will always value the memories of my 25-plus years at NFD and the relationships with my colleagues in the profession,” said Wyant.
