On Tuesday night, the seventh-ranked Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles hosted the first of a two game series in the Circle City Conference against Covenant Christian.
Covenant got going right away in the first with two runs on a two-run single, but the Golden Eagles came right back in the bottom.
Sam Tabor singled to drive in Nolan Ratcliff to cut the deficit to 2-1. Guerin would then tie the game 2-2 in the home half of the second on a Nathan Gremelspacher base hit to center that sent Cuinn Morrow home.
CC tacked on another run in the top of the third to go up 3-2, but that would be all the Golden Eagles yielded.
Morrow bunted to the pitcher and was safe at first on an error by the Warriors pitcher Kimmerle. The error gave Ian Taylor the chance to score on the play to tie it again at 3-3.
Davis Wagner drove home Will Fremion for a 4-3 score that wound up being what Guerin would need to win.
Guerin Catholic would continue to put insurance runs on the board. Tabor again took a hit to center to plate Ratcliff to push it to 5-3.
The bottom of the sixth would put it out of reach of the Warriors. Taylor scored on an error by Covenant catcher Jones. A Gremelspacher sacrifice fly that sent Morrow home for the 7-3 final would put a cap on the first game of the series.
Morrow went 3-for-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and scored. Wagner and Tabor both hit in two of their three at-bats. Tabor drove in two and Wagner one.
Wagner and Morrow combined for seven innings and nine strikeouts on the mound.
In game two of the series on Wednesday, it was Guerin that would get scoring right away.
Fremion led off with a walk and then advanced to third on an Ian Taylor double. Fremion scored on a Davis Wagner ground out for a 1-0 Guerin lead. Ian Taylor made it 2-0, scoring on a ground out to the mound.
Covenant Christian scored once in the first and third, but this game also belonged to the Golden Eagles.
Guerin put three on the board in the top of the sixth and then another pair in the top of the seventh to overtake the host Warriors and a 7-2 win, grabbing both games of the Circle City series.
Taylor led with three hits in four at-bats and scored twice. AJ Nunley and Bryson Dorsey both had two hits, while Davis Wagner drove in two. Tate Troxell threw a solid five innings, striking out nine CC hitters.
The two-game series win keeps Guerin Catholic atop the standings early on in the season, tied with Roncalli, both at 3-0 CCC. The Golden Eagles are now 6-0 overall and hit the road at New Palestine (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
