CARMEL – The 200th goal of Sophie Mock’s stellar lacrosse career will always mean something to the Carmel girls lacrosse team.
Mock put in her historic goal with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter of the Greyhounds’ game with Guerin Catholic Tuesday at Brian Murray Stadium. That goal also broke a tie between Carmel and the Golden Eagles, pushing the ‘Hounds ahead 7-6.
That would be the final score of a highly-anticipated and intense game between the two teams that have played for the Indiana Girls Lacrosse Association Class 2A state championship the past three years. Carmel won in 2024, with Guerin Catholic winning the previous two.
“As a team today, we just really wanted to win,” said Mock. “And while individual accomplishments can be great, ultimately, the goal was to win as a team. So, to have that being the winning goal is just amazing.”
“That was exciting for her,” said Carmel coach Josh Miller. “That’s a heck of a feat. That’s a lot of goals in four years. She’s got a lot more in her, that’s for sure. She’s a heck of a player.”

Mock’s goal gave the Greyhounds the lead for the first time in the game. The Golden Eagles scored first, with Jane Cline putting in a goal early in the opening quarter. Mock tied the game later in that period, but Gabby Deer scored with 37 seconds left in the quarter, and Guerin Catholic led 2-1.
The second period was the most active one, with the teams combining for five goals. Elle Tomalia tied the game a minute and a half into the period, then Cline struck again: her second goal of the game put GC ahead 3-2 with 8:57 left.
Neither team scored again until the last minute of the half. Jackie Mabry tied the game with 47 seconds to go, then Deer made a free shot at the 15-second mark, pushing Guerin ahead 4-3. But Mock scored a goal at the last second, and that made it 4-4 at halftime.
Clarie Flanningan took over for the Golden Eagles in the third quarter. She scored at the 7:11 mark to move Guerin Catholic ahead 5-4. Breckin Hare tied the game with a goal less than a minute later, but Flannagan scored again late, and the Golden Eagles went into the fourth quarter with a 6-5 lead.
But Tomalia put in a goal with 9:45 left, then Mock scored her game-winner. That gave Mock three goals for the game, while Tomalia finished with two. Cline and Flannagan both scored twice for Guerin Catholic.
Miller was pleased that his team bounced back from an early loss to Hinsdale (Ill.) Central. The win against the Golden Eagles is Carmel’s second in a row; they won an 18-11 game at Detroit Country Day School last Saturday.
“Those losses, you never want them,” said Miller. But the coach also said “this early in the season, it wasn’t the worst thing and I think we bounced back pretty well.”
Carmel is 5-1 for the season and is taking several days off for Spring Break. The Greyhounds’ next games are April 12 when they travel to the Columbus, Ohio area to play two games at Thomas Worthington. Carmel takes on Worthington first, then Strongsville later that day.
The Golden Eagles dropped their first game of the season and are now 10-1. They also will be off for Spring Break and are back in action April 16 at Bishop Chatard.
