Every score on a five-man golf team is important, a lesson the Noblesville boys golf team was happy to remind everyone of on Monday.
The Millers reclaimed their own sectional championship, which they hosted at Harbour Trees. It came down to the fifth-man scored before Noblesville edged out two-time defending sectional champion Hamilton Southeastern. Both teams scored 296, with the Millers getting the win by one stroke.
Noblesville also got help from its No. 4 golfer Dustin Turpin. He wound up as the Millers’ low man, carding an even-par 72 to tie for second place individually. Drew Werkley and Tyler Marucci both scored 73s, while Lance Decker and Jackson Umthum each totaled 78.
“It’s one of those things where we try to make sure that those kids understand that, it doesn’t matter whether you’re playing No. 1 or No. 5, you’re just as important,” said Noblesville coach Gary Deakyne. “All of our kids understand that, and when somebody’s down, they pick them back up.”
The top three teams advance to Thursday’s regional at The Players Club in Yorktown, so the Royals will join the Millers there. Pendleton Heights claimed the third spot with a score of 310.
Southeastern’s Kai Warner won medalist honors with a one-under par score of 71. He made a clutch putt on the 18th green to clinch the one-stroke victory.
“I feel like I hung in there really well,” said Warner. “I hit so many good putts all day and I just knew if I stayed patient, they’d go in.”
Mattingly Upchurch scored 74 for the Royals, followed by Dane Starnes with 75, Brody Colburn with 76 and Blake Babb with 79.
Fishers placed fourth with a team score of 312. Tommy Klinker led the Tigers with a 73; he will advance to regional as one of the three low individuals not on an advancing team. Lucas Brown added 77.
Hamilton Heights finished with 352. Kole Kirtley led the Huskies with 80.
