Current Carmel City Councilor Miles Nelson was joined by his wife, Carolina, at the Hamilton County Clerk’s office Thursday afternoon to launch his candidacy for Mayor of Carmel.

The Primary Election will be held on May 2. It is expected Nelson will be the only candidate to file in the Democratic primary, making him the presumed challenger to the winner of the Republican primary in the November 2023 General Election.

“I love this city and what it’s given to me and my family. I’m extraordinarily passionate about the people who live here, and the ways we support one another,” Nelson said. “Under the leadership of Mayor Brainard, we have seen remarkable population growth and development as Carmel has transformed into a city that leads our region in nearly every quality of life, safety, recreation, and inclusivity measure. We are nationally recognized as one of the best places to live in the country. I’m running for mayor so we can continue to keep Carmel moving forward.”

A lifelong Hoosier, Miles and his wife first moved to Carmel 18 years ago. He is an entrepreneur with decades of experience in business ownership, business development, executive leadership, and nonprofit board service. He was first elected to the Carmel City Council in 2019.

Given the retirement of longtime mayor Jim Brainard, this November will host the most competitive general election in the city’s history. Observers expect this race to be one of the most closely watched in the state of Indiana.
