Memorial Day: Honoring the fallen

By CHRIS JETER

State Representative

Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for the brave heroes who gave their lives defending the United States of America. No amount of gratitude can ever fully repay the debt owed to these servicemen and women, and to their loved ones. Whether it’s May 30 or any other day, we owe a special salute to those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

On Memorial Day, Americans will pay tribute to the fallen men and women who served in our armed forces. Unlike Veterans Day honoring all veterans, this holiday is reserved for commemorating those who died while on active duty, in battle or as a result of wounds sustained while serving.

In addition to placing flags at gravesites of our fallen heroes, there are other ways to honor Memorial Day. The city of Fishers will honor the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom at a special ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, May 30 at the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in front of Fishers City Hall. After the ceremony, visitors are encouraged to take a walk around the Central Green and Nickel Plate District Amphitheater to see the new light pole banners honoring local veterans and active-duty service members from the Fishers community. For more information, visit fishers.in.us.

As a veteran, I know the pain of serving alongside friends who are no longer with us. In their memory, I offer my deepest respect and extend my sincerest sympathy to their families and loved ones. Please join me this Memorial Day in reflecting upon those who sacrificed so much and laid down their lives to serve our country. Thank you to every Hoosier and American who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Your dedication to our country will never be forgotten.

Families of fallen heroes and veterans, please feel free to reach out for assistance with navigating earned benefits and resources by calling (317) 234-0931 or emailing h88@iga.in.gov.
