Melva Irene Irion

May 4, 1935 – March 12, 2025

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a remarkable woman, Melva Irene Irion, who left this world on March 12, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on May 4, 1935, in Evansville, Ind., to Melvin and Lucille Skeels, Melva was a loving and spirited soul who brought joy to everyone she encountered.

Melva was, at her core, a woman of many talents and a heart full of generosity. As an office manager at Steven A. Wilson Builders before her retirement, Melva’s creativity and hard work were evident in everything she did. Melva was an ardent lover of life, always ready to take on a new adventure. She was a diligent gardener, a lover of music and dance, an avid card player, often engaging in spirited games of euchre. Melva found immense joy in cooking and baking, often creating meals that gathered her family around the table in love and laughter. She was also a founding member of Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church in Carmel, a dedicated member of her church choir, and in her seasoned years was a member of Cicero United Methodist Church. Her love for travel took her to many places, but she held a special place in her heart for anywhere with a beach, especially Dauphin Island, Ala.

Melva was a beacon of love and generosity, leaving a significant impact on everyone she met. For Melva, happiness was found in her family – the people who mattered most to her. She leaves behind her beloved sons, Kevin and Kenneth Phelps; her cherished grandsons, Jordan and Brandon (Alyssa) Phelps; and treasured niece, Charlene (Joe) Salpietra. Melva is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Lucille Skeels; and her brother, Charles Skeels.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2025, at Hartley Funeral Homes, Cicero, 209 W. Jackson St. The funeral service will follow at the same venue at 2 p.m. with Mark Knapp officiating. A graveside to follow at Carey Cemetery.

We invite you to celebrate this extraordinary woman’s life by sharing your favorite memories, stories, and photographs on her memorial page. Melva’s life was a testament to the power of love, generosity, and spirit, and her legacy will continue to inspire us all.
