The Hamilton East Public Library (HEPL) will welcome New York Times bestselling author Kwame Mbalia to the Fishers Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 24.

Mbalia is a husband, father, writer, publisher, and former pharmaceutical metrologist (in that order). He is the author of the bestselling Tristan Strong series, the first installment of which received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor.

Mbalia is also the co-author of Last Gate of the Emperor with Prince Joel Makonnen, published by Scholastic, and the editor of the No. 1 New York Times bestselling anthology Black Boy Joy, published by Delacorte Press.

In addition to his writing, Mbalia serves as a publisher for Freedom Fire, his imprint created in collaboration with Disney Books. His newest middle grade adventure, Jax Freeman and the Phantom Shriek, a Freedom Fire title, was released in October 2024. A graduate of Howard University and a Midwesterner now living in North Carolina, Mbalia says he survives on dad jokes and Cheez-Its.

“We are excited to host Kwame Mbalia at the Hamilton East Public Library,” HEPL Systemwide Program Coordinator Allison Kartman said. “Kwame’s works mainly focus on middle grade readers, and his Tristan Strong and Jax Freeman series will please any Percy Jackson fan who enjoys tales of gods, legends, and mythical tales! Author visits are always a great way for kids and families to connect with the people behind their favorite stories and learn more about the process of writing and becoming a published author.”

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but is highly encouraged to help staff prepare for attendance. Following the program, Mbalia will be available to sign books. LoudMouth Books will be onsite beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a selection of titles available for purchase.
