Marian University & Ascension St. Vincent partner for ‘Come Explore Nursing’ event

Calling future nurses: Marian University and Ascension St. Vincent are looking for you.

The university’s Leighton School of Nursing and Ascension St. Vincent will showcase the many pathways in a burgeoning field and the opportunities to give back to the greater good at a free event on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

“Come Explore Nursing” will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. in the main lobby of Ascension St. Vincent’s Women and Infants Hospital, 2001 W. 86th St., Door 4A, Indianapolis. This event is for anyone interested in nursing at any level, from high schoolers to career changers, to help current and future nurses find their calling while filling the ongoing need for healthcare professionals in Indiana.

Those interested in attending can meet Marian University’s faculty, admissions staff, students and Ascension St. Vincent’s nursing leadership. Attendees will also learn about Marian University’s nursing programs, including traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Accelerated BSN, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.

“This event is a chance for participants to learn about the rewards of becoming a nurse,” said Angela Bailey, site director of Marian University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.

The event is timely, considering the persistent shortage of nurses nationally and locally.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the need for nursing professionals to grow by 6 percent through 2033, faster than the average for all occupations.

Closer to home, the Indiana Hospital Association estimates that the state will need an additional 5,000 nurses by 2031. The need is especially critical considering that one in four Hoosiers will be retirement age or older by the end of the decade.

“Marian University is uniquely positioned to provide a much-needed answer to the growing nursing shortage in Indiana,” Bailey said, “while putting nurses to work in careers they love.”

Marian University nursing programs include:

  • Traditional BSN: Acampus program offered as a four-year degree.
  • Accelerated BSN: A 16-month program that combines online coursework with hands-on labs and clinical rotations. Through the partnership with Ascension St. Vincent, Marian University provides a unique opportunity to make a career transition without starting over.
  • DNP: A hybrid platform program for BSN-prepared registered nurses at the highest level seeking advanced clinical practice and leadership roles. Both Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) tracks are available.

“Nursing is more than a career – it’s a calling to serve, heal, and lead with compassion,” said Jill Payne, DNP, RN, CENP, Chief Nursing Officer at Ascension St. Vincent. “Events like this provide a window into what’s possible as it offers support and inspiration to anyone ready to begin or change their professional journey.”
