Louis R. “Lee” Hunt, 82, of Carmel, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, August 13, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 11, 1934 to the late James Hunt and Frances (Randall) Hunt Hutchens in Indianapolis.
Lee loved to work. He started out selling newspapers at age 12, riding his bike all over Plainfield, Ind., delivering papers regardless of the weather. As he got older, Lee worked at the Indianapolis News and later the Indianapolis Star.
Lee was a natural born salesman. He sold Knapp Shoes for many years. Then, in 1966, Lee became an insurance agent in the Ordinary Division of Prudential Insurance Company. He took retirement in 1992, although he never really retired; he continued his career working in his own agency, Hunt & Associates Insurance and Financial Services Inc., along with his sons, making this a third generation agency. Each son now has his own agency.
Lee was a Life and Qualifying Member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He also held other memberships with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, the Rolls Royce Owners Club and the Circle City Corvair Club. Because of Lee’s success in the insurance business, he and Janet attended many conferences which took them to Hawaii, Europe and many US cities. They loved riding motorcycles and traveled many miles to all US states except Alaska. While on insurance trips, they rented motorcycles in Hawaii and Montreux, Switzerland. Lee also loved classic cars. He and Janet won many awards and drove many miles. They drove their 1967 Corvair to many car conventions from Buffalo, N.Y. to Las Vegas, Nev.
Lee loved his sons and was always teaching them, starting them out by learning how to change the oil in their cars. He never stopped teaching, even as they grew into fine young men. Lee continued on by teaching his grandkids how to put air in their bicycle tires, which was important so they could ride their bikes to Grandpa and Grandma’s house. Another lesson he taught the grandkids was to know when the corn and soybeans were ready by putting a few in your hand and chew them, of course!
Lee’s greatest delight was to give the grandkids scooter/side car rides, which were always full of kids, whether they were family or friends of the kids. He started them out as young as four months old and continued until they could no longer fit in the side car. Lee would ride them all over the farm in the woods looking for bears or Indians; he would take them down a path, stop and be really quiet to listen for the bear. The bear was actually a scarecrow set deep in the woods, dressed in Grandpa’s clothes. Later, Lee received a bear statue for Christmas. One never knew where Mr. Bear would show up. Mr. Bear had to have clothes, which was no easy task since he was very large. Sometimes, Mr. Bear was dressed as Hawaiian bear, Mama Bear, or Farmer Bear.
Lee and Janet spent their winters in Florida, but were always home for the holidays. They rode their motorcycle to and from Florida, and all around the state. Golf was a new hobby for Lee and he played with a group called The 9 Holers. He always wore a hat, so he bought his golfing buddies hats as well.
Lee, or LeRoy as he was known to his many friends and family, loved life. But more than life, he loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janet Casey Hunt, who he married on June 6, 1970; and their three sons, Charles Ray (Becky) Hunt, Dennis Allen Hunt and Ronald Keith (Lori) Hunt, all of Carmel. Lee and Janet were blessed with nine grandchildren, Kelly Hunt of Mooresville, Natalie Hunt of Westfield, Christie Hunt of Alabama, Dustin Hunt of Carmel, Jennifer (Albert) Rhodes of New Jersey, Paige Hunt of Noblesville, Morgan (Grady) Ludeke of New York, Amanda Hunt of Westfield, and Brittany Hunt of Bloomington; 14 great-grandchildren, Ronald Hunt, Joshua Hedges, Jonah Harris, Noah Harris, Alex Jackson, Emma Jackson, Addison Rhodes, Aidan Rhodes, Owen Rhodes, Tristan Hunt, Corbin Artman, Piper Hunt, Leeann Hunt and Danica Hunt; two great-great-grandchildren, Jasik Hedges and Kimberly Hedges; two sisters, Rosalie Hancook and Susan Earls of Plainfield; one brother, John Hutchens of Plainfield; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Radiant Christian Life Church, 16162 Carey Road, in Westfield. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the church, with and additional visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Gary Sobol will officiate. Entombment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Park Cemetery in Westfield.
