Lois Ann Hungate, 95, Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Marquette Manor in Indianapolis. She was born on June 28, 1929, to Sterling and Fayetta (Fitch) Simonds in Lakewood, Ohio.
Lois graduated from OSU with a bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and a PhD. For 31 years, she taught at Ohio State University, retiring as Associate Professor of Agricultural Economics. Lois was a member of the American Marketing Association and the American Agricultural Economics Association. She was a sponsor of American Agricultural Economics Club at OSU for several years, and was a 10-year 4-H member (food and clothing).
Lois traveled all over the world with the Alumni Association of OSU (Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean). She also enjoyed traveling to South Africa on safari, Brazil, Japan, Taiwan, and Russia. Lois cruised the Rhine, the Caribbean, and China. She attended numerous OSU bowl games; took a three-month sabbatical with OSU at University of Hawaii (Oahu); was an accomplished quilter and tailor; made doll clothes and sold them at craft fairs; grew up on a vegetable farm (beans, berries, and tomatoes); hosted a weekly radio show at OSU on Food Economics; and was a co-author of a book named Food Economics.
The family would like to thank the staff at Marquette Manor for the many years of caring for Lois. Also, most recently, the help from Senior Home Companions was much appreciated.
She is survived by her niece, Bonnie Benson; nephews, Randall Benson and Rodney (Kara) Benson; great nephew, Grayson Benson; and her brother-in-law, Robert Benson.
In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. Hungate; brother, Glenn Simonds; and her sister, Florence Benson.
