The Indiana Council on World Affairs will hold a webinar discussing the importance of the United States’ relationship with Taiwan. The featured speaker will be Eric Huang, Director-General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago. The webinar will be held on Zoom at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. Taiwan has long been recognized as an example of democracy, freedom and a global rules-based order, and is a vital and reliable partner and ally to the U.S., especially under the U.S.’s free and open Indo-Pacific strategy. Taiwan is geo-strategically important with a consistent record of pragmatic and laudable policies in both domestic and International sectors. In this program, attendees will explore the more than 40 years of partnership and cooperation between the U.S. and Taiwan.

More about Huang

Director-General Eric Huang, who has a diplomatic career of more than 20 years, served two tours respectively in Singapore and Canada before relocating to Chicago as head of Taiwan’s mission to the U.S. Midwest. He has worked in various departments in Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). From 2016 to 2018, he was the deputy director-general of MOFA’s Department of International Cooperation and Economic Affairs, which oversees Taiwan’s international aid and cooperation programs. Between his first two tours, he also worked in the National Security Council as a senior assistant to a deputy secretary-general on areas of Taiwan’s national economic security and trade policy.

Huang has a Master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago. He was also assigned by MOFA to attend training programs at Harvard University and at Oxford University at different times. He graduated from National Taiwan University with a Bachelor’s degree in international business. Born in 1973, Eric Huang is married and the father of two teenagers.
