Lacrosse: Carmel girls win sectional opener, host Penn Friday for championship

The Carmel girls lacrosse team won its first-round sectional game Wednesday, 19-5 over Culver Academies.
Culver jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Greyhounds took over from there, leading 13-3 at halftime. Tori Tomalia led Carmel with four goals, one assist and seven draw controls. Other scorers for the ‘Hounds were Avery Goehl (four goals), Hollis Rang (three goals), Sophie Mock (two goals and two assists), Pey Henney (two goals), Sophia Hann (one goal), Anna Dumke (one goal), Elle Tomalia (one goal and one assist) and Breckin Hare (one goal and one assist). Sophia Nour made one assist.
Carmel will host Penn Friday in the sectional championship game at 6 p.m. Friday. The Kingsmen beat Zionsville 16-13 in the other first-round game.

Hamilton Southeastern’s boys team won its regular-season finale on Tuesday, beating Zionsville 18-5 in an away game.
Garrett Smith, recently committed to play at Ohio Wesleyan University, scored five goals, handed out five assists, and collected one ground ball to lead the offense. Connor Ruhnow helped out with four goals and a ground ball. Michael Mattalino added three goals and two ground balls, while Kai Trott scored two goals, dished out an assist and collected one ground ball.
On defense, freshman Dillon O’Rourke had a huge game with four ground balls and a caused turnover. Hayden Holmes was solid with three ground balls, while Hayden Grace had two ground balls and a caused turnover. Nolan Knies and Aidan Hoener both collected a ground ball, while Gavin Wright had two ground balls.
