The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department is making residents aware the jury duty phone scam may be resurfacing again in Hamilton County. Phone scams tend to run in cycles, and the Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a recent call threatening arrest for missing jury duty.
In the jury duty scam, the victim is called and told an arrest warrant has been issued for missing jury duty. The caller usually continues that the matter can be cleared up by paying the warrant, typically by prepaid credit card. The call often appears legitimate by the scammer using a spoofed phone number or the name of a deputy.
As a reminder, arrest warrants are never served by telephone. If you receive a phone call threatening arrest there is no reason to continue the conversation. To report the phone call or to have an officer check, contact Hamilton County Public Safety Communications at (317) 773-1282.
