Janice Ruth Manchess

December 14, 1943 – July 1, 2026

Janice Ruth Manchess, known affectionately as Jan, passed away on July 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on December 14, 1943, in Covington, Ky., to Judge Brown and Ruth VanHorn, Janice was a beacon of compassion and love throughout her 82 years. She lived a life steeped in generosity, always keeping track of birthdays and anniversaries and was known for her handwritten thank-you notes. A loyal friend and family member, Jan’s spirit was a testament to her deep love for her family and faith. Her deepest desire was to be who Jesus wanted her to be … a servant helping others.

Jan married the love of her life, Warren Manchess, on January 25, 1964, and together they built a life in Cicero. They were married for 62 years, but had a relationship for almost 70 years beginning with singing duets when she was 13 years old. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership, marked by mutual respect and endless love.

As a dental assistant and office manager, Janice worked tirelessly in the healthcare sector, bringing comfort and care to her patients. However, it was her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother that brought her the most joy. She loved being with her family, whether it was singing duets with Warren, camping at McCormick’s Creek, or caring for her great-grandchildren. She considered taking care of the great-grandchildren as the greatest gift of all; their smiling faces, receiving big hugs, and their excitement at seeing “Gigi.” Jan was known for her beautiful singing voice. She sang at church, weddings, and other occasions, as well as with her children. She was a loyal member at Cicero Christian Church and was never reluctant to share her unwavering faith.

Jan’s family was the center of her universe. She is survived by her beloved husband, Warren; her children, Vanessa (Ron) Qualls and Warren “Scott” (Paula) Manchess; her grandchildren, Mallory (Aaron) Charles, Malachi Qualls, Erica (Brady) Robertson, Emma (Jake) Catt, Erin (Eric) Weaver, and Ellie Manchess; her great-grandchildren, Elijah, Anna, Isaiah, Reagan, Cooper, and Logan; her sister, Judy (Glendel) Hicks; and her nieces and nephews, Robbie, Phillip, Jeff, Robin, and Troy. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Judge and Ruth VanHorn.

Visitation for Janice will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 6, 2026, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at Cicero Christian Church, 1715 Stringtown Pike, Cicero. The funeral service will follow the visitation on Tuesday, July 7 at 11 a.m., also at Cicero Christian Church. Services are under the direction of Hartley-Dunnichay Funeral Homes – Cicero.
