Jacqueline L. “Jackie” Stapleton

June 30, 1927 – July 10, 2018

Jacqueline L. “Jackie” Stapleton, 91, Sheridan, entered into Heaven on Tuesday evening, July 10, 2018, and into God’s loving arms, and once again reunited with parents, her two sisters and her granddaughter.

Born June 30, 1927 in Arcadia, she was the daughter of the late Lowell Eugene “Dewey” and Julia Evelyn (Foster) Leonard. Jackie’s family later moved to Sheridan, where she and her three siblings were raised. While growing up, Jackie seemed to have a way with animals. She loved barrel racing her horse Silk and enjoyed her daily walks with her dog Stubby. Stubby would follow Jackie to school every morning. During her high school years, she went to work in the family business. Her father owned and operated the Dinner Bell Restaurant, and later, Dewey’s Drive Inn. Working at the restaurant was truly a family affair and a labor of love. Everyone in the family pitched in and did their part. Jackie graduated from Sheridan High School with the Class of 1945.

In 1946, she married Reese Stapleton, and would have three wonderful children together. After about 10 years, Jackie and Reese would move the family to Kokomo and begin the next chapter in her life. For a number of years she owned and operated the Kokomo Liquor Store. Jackie would eventually hire on with Delco Electronics in 1969, and remain with the company as a line operator inspector until her retirement in 1992. Shortly after starting at Delco, 1970 to be exact, Jackie returned home to Sheridan.

Jackie was a life member of the Sheridan Order of Eastern Star and a life member of the Sheridan Wesleyan Church, of which her mother’s family were founding members. She was also a member of the United Auto Workers.

She is survived by her brother, Gene Leonard (Marilyn), Sheridan; her son, Craig Stapleton (Debbie), Kokomo; two daughters, Suzy Preston (Jerry), Westfield, Shareese Scott, Bowling Green, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Lewis (Jim), Westfield, Rachel Hubbard (Greg), Brighton, Mich., Joshua Scott, Bowling Green, Ky., Timothy Scott, Forestville, Calif., Rebekah Scott, Bowling Green, Ky., Shawn Stapleton, Kokomo, and Brian Stapleton, Pensacola, Fla.; step grandchildren, Eric Preston (Gina), Kokomo, Anthony Preston, Indianapolis, and Aaron Gilsinger, Kokomo; and by her most precious possessions, her 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Anne Quick and Sara Lee Molden; her granddaughter, Jennifer Downs; brother-in-law, Jesse Quick; and her former husband, Reese L. Stapleton.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2018 at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation from noon until the time of service. Pastor Matt Hartke will be officiating. Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.
