Ivy Tech Hamilton County establishes Timothy J. Burton Memorial Scholarship

Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County has announced the Timothy J. Burton Memorial Scholarship, a newly established fund that will support Sheridan High School graduates pursuing careers in the skilled trades.

The initial funding was started by Brian Myers, a close friend of Burton, to honor a remarkable life and lasting friendship. Since then, other friends and family members touched by Tim’s life and legacy have contributed additional funds. This outpouring of support is a powerful testament to the impact he had on those around him.

“I literally woke up one morning and decided I wanted to create a scholarship to forever honor the memory of his life,” Myers said. “Ivy Tech seemed like the most appropriate place to do so.”

Burton passed away in October 2024. A gifted carpenter and beloved friend, his passion for the trades and his lifelong work ethic left a lasting impact on those around him. Myers and Burton shared over 50 years of friendship – a bond built on mutual respect, dedication, and the joy of skilled craftsmanship.

“Tim was one hell of a carpenter and a great and loyal friend,” Myers said. “I wanted to give someone the opportunity to learn a skilled trade like he did, and to contribute those skills over a lifetime.”

The scholarship is designed for Sheridan High School seniors who are committed to entering the trades. It will support recipients with their tuition costs at Ivy Tech, reducing financial barriers and encouraging students to take pride in their hands-on skills and future careers.

“I hope they graduate with less debt and strive to be the best at their trade, like Tim was his whole career,” Myers said. “I want students to know that they don’t have to attend a four-year university. Ivy Tech is a hidden gem in our community.”

The scholarship recognizes and supports students who demonstrate a strong work ethic, a commitment to learning a trade, and the humility that defined Burton’s own life. Myers emphasized that Ivy Tech was the right partner for this effort, noting that Burton got his start learning construction skills at J. Everett Light Career Center.

“Ivy Tech will do the same for today’s students – equip them with the skills and confidence to build meaningful careers,” Myers said.

As students benefit from this memorial scholarship, Myers said he hopes they take the opportunity seriously and recognize the deep intention behind the gift.

“His legacy will live on in them,” he said. “And if Tim were here, he’d say it wasn’t necessary to honor him – but I know he’d appreciate that it’s making a difference.”
