Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County introduces new Dementia Care Class

Ivy Tech Community College Hamilton County has announced the launch of a new Dementia Care Class, designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in caring for individuals with dementia.

This eight-week course will be held from Oct. 21 to Dec. 15, 2024, on Tuesdays from 6 to 8:50 p.m. Classes will be available both on-campus or via Zoom, providing flexible learning options for all participants.

The Dementia Care Class aims to introduce students to the disease process and various aspects of caring for individuals with dementia. Key topics covered in the course include:

• Treating the patient with dementia as a person
• Medical treatment of dementia
• The importance of proper communication
• Creating a safe environment for individuals with dementia
• Involving family in the care of the client with dementia
• Planning meaningful and enjoyable activities for patients with dementia

This course meets all the requirements outlined in the Indiana Department of Health regulations for health care workers in long-term care facilities. Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

• Identify the major characteristics of dementia as a chronic, progressive disease process.
• Explore current dementia treatment modalities.
• Discuss how an individual’s unmet needs influence their behavior.
• Provide a safe environment for individuals living with dementia.
• Integrate family and caregivers into the care process.
• Plan and execute care and activities that are meaningful to clients living with dementia.
• Utilize appropriate communication techniques while interacting with individuals with dementia.

The curriculum includes an overview of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, stages of dementia, person-centered care, communicating with individuals living with dementia, understanding and preventing behaviors, and exploring appropriate activities for individuals living with dementia.
