Indiana Wesleyan University transforms vocational learning with hands-on automotive technology program

Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), a national leader in higher education, is advancing vocational training that positions its students to step into valuable careers with its new Associate of Science in Automotive Technology.

The program blends flexible online courses with in-person, hands-on training at real automotive workplaces, helping students develop the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to diagnose, maintain, and repair modern vehicles. Under the mentorship of experienced professionals, students also develop communication skills, professional habits, and an ethical foundation to serve customers with honesty and care.

“With our automotive technology program, we saw a need for students to gain hands-on experience with the most up-to-date tools and automotive systems,” said Christopher Lagoni, assistant professor for the School of Integrated Learning and Development at IWU. “Our partnerships with licensed automotive workplaces are essential in addressing this gap while helping fill the workforce roles businesses need. We’re excited to offer a new career pathway that extends learning beyond the classroom.”

IWU’s automotive technology program, now open for enrollment, follows a five-step process. After submitting an online application, students are matched with a leading dealership or repair facility aligned with their career goals. They gain hands-on experience in tool handling, diagnostic techniques and more, supported by industry mentors. At the same time, IWU’s online coursework reinforces industry standards and essential soft skills. Graduates leave the program prepared to begin careers as automotive technicians.

Both coursework and workplace experience fulfill degree requirements. Students are prepared to diagnose and repair vehicle systems – including engines, brakes, electrical, suspension, HVAC, and transmissions – using industry-standard tools and manufacturer specifications. Students are also trained to follow safety protocols and OSHA guidelines to maintain a compliant, professional work environment.
