The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis (THFGI) and the Indiana AIDS Fund invite Hoosiers to participate in the 36th annual Indiana AIDS Walk on Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., and the Walk steps off at 1 p.m.
Funds raised through the Indiana AIDS Walk support the Gregory R. Powers Direct Emergency Financial Assistance (DEFA) program. The program helps Hoosiers living with HIV address urgent expenses that can interfere with their health, stability, and ability to remain connected to care.
“Living a healthy life is more than access to medications,” THFGI President and CEO Jason Grisell said. “A missed rent payment, utility shutoff or lack of transportation can quickly prevent someone from receiving the care they need. The Indiana AIDS Walk turns community support into practical assistance that helps our neighbors remain healthy, housed and connected to care.”
DEFA funds are available to Hoosiers throughout Indiana’s 92 counties and are distributed through agencies that provide direct care management and support to people living with HIV. The funds can help cover:
- Housing and utility expenses
- Food, clothing, and personal-care items
- Medication and medical visits
- Transportation to appointments and pharmacies
- Phone and internet service
- Other urgent needs
“Because of the generous support of the community, we can continue to provide emergency financial assistance to Hoosiers in all 92 counties,” Grisell said. “Every step and every dollar helps people living with HIV meet basic needs, stay connected to care, and live healthier lives.”
The Indiana AIDS Walk also brings the community together to increase awareness, challenge HIV-related stigma and honor the lives of those affected by the epidemic.
