Hamilton Heights dropped its football opener Friday, falling at Lapel 29-20.
The Bulldogs scored a quick touchdown and two-point conversion pass to lead 8-0 early in the first quarter. Drew Woodruff got the Huskies on the board with an 18-yard touchdown throw to Cam Fleming at the end of the first quarter.
Woodruff tossed another TD pass early in the second quarter, a 63-yard throw to Keaton Weaver. That gave Heights a 14-8 lead. But Lapel scored on two short runs, one late in the second period and another one with 3:35 left in the third to go ahead 22-14.
The Huskies cut the lead to 22-20 when Woodruff scored on a five-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Heights tried going for two, but the Bulldogs made a sack. Lapel then scored on a long touchdown pass to finish the scoring.
“Lapel’s a good football team,” said Heights coach Jon Kirschner. “They capitalized on key mistakes and the big takeaway is, we had a lot of young, new varsity kids step up and play in a big way even though adversity through the entire game.”
“The three or four key plays that defined a close football game, did not go in our favor,” said Kirschner.
Stats were unavailable at press time and will appear in a later edition. The Huskies host their home opener next Friday against Triton Central.
