‘Hounds get tournament win at Kyle Osborn Invitational

Carmel takes on No. 3 Center Grove, Fishers competes at Jeff Classic, Heights places fifth at McKee Invitational

The Carmel wrestling team scored a solid tournament win last Saturday in the Kyle Osborn Invitational at McCutcheon. The Greyhounds scored 211 points for the team victory, with the host Mavericks the runners-up at 182.5 points.

Carmel scored points in every weight class at the meet and had three individual champions. Carlo Federici won at 106 pounds, Tamir Halevi took the 113-pound division with a technical fall in the final, and Jackson Schmidt was the winner at 150 pounds.

An additional three Greyhounds were runners-up in their weight class. Jacob Gardner placed second at 120, as did Caleb Mattingly at 132 and Drew VanBibber at 165. Three more Carmel wrestlers took third: Jairo Ojeda-Cortes at 157, Alex Ryan at 175 and Killian Miller at 285.

Other Greyhounds place winners were Ben Gardner (fourth at 126), Alex Agee (fifth at 126), Elijah Penquite (fifth at 144), Adel Navarrete (fifth at 190), William Massey (fifth at 215), Arty Bryant (fifth at 285), Jackson Timmons (sixth at 165) and Tyler Elliot (seventh at 138).

Carmel did not rest on its laurels after its win at McCutcheon. Instead, the Greyhounds took on Center Grove, the No. 3-ranked team in IndianaMat.com’s Class 4A top 10 rankings on Wednesday.

The Trojans were in control of the match early and eventually won the dual 57-10. Carmel got two wins: Ryan got a fall at 175 pounds, then Halevi took the 113-pound match with a 16-5 major decision.

“We thought our fight was good today,” said Greyhounds coach Ed Pendoski. “We got positions we need to get better at. We’re happy with where we’re at. We’re looking forward to going to break. We’re looking forward to training for the postseason.”

Fishers traveled to Jeffersonville last Saturday to compete in the 2023 Jeff Classic. The Tigers finished third out of 27 teams in a very close meet: Oldham County (Ky.) was the meet champion with 237 points, Bloomington South the runner-up with 236.5, points, then Fishers scored 229.5 points to get the bronze.

The Tigers had one individual champion at the meet. Junior Chayce Yant flew through the 126-pound division, winning two matches by fall and his other two by technical fall. One of those tech falls came in the championship bout, where Yant defeated Oldham County’s Aeson Springer 15-0.

Will Hruskoci was the runner-up at 113 pounds, while Xavier Smith took second at 165. Fishers also got three third-place finishers: Teyon Leonard at 138, Diego Carabano at 175 and Julian Burgett at 190. Other place winners for the Tigers were Aiden Lamb (fifth at 132), Stephen Breck (sixth at 150), Seth Lamb (seventh at 106), Owen Ingalls (seventh at 120) and Camden Funk (eighth at 157).

Hamilton Heights placed fifth in the John McKee Memorial Invitational last Saturday at Rochester.

Two Huskies wrestlers finished first in their weight classes. Jaylyn Pugh was the winner at 144 pounds, while Michael Cain triumphed at 157 pounds. Cooper Doucette was the runner-up at 113 pounds, with Carson Fettig placing second at 150.

Kendall Moe took third at 106 pounds. Other place winners were Alex Furst (fourth at 138), Andrew Latits (fifth at 285), Aiden Furst (seventh at 165), Josh Getchell (eighth at 120).

Hamilton Heights won a dual meet with Guerin Catholic 72-12 on Tuesday.

All of the matches were decided by either forfeit or pin. Huskies getting falls were Caden Green, Furst, Pugh, Fettig, Cain and Aiden Serna. The Golden Eagles’ Peter Nguyen won his match by fall.
