Hamilton County Parks and Recreation (HCPR) has received $5,000 from MIBOR’s Community Impact Initiative. This funding will support the installation of communication boards at the Morse Park and Beach and the White River Campground playgrounds, assisting individuals with speech impairments or those who are nonverbal.
HCPR installed a communication board at Cool Creek Park’s playground last month, thanks to the generous support of the Channing’s Joy Foundation. These communication boards allow individuals to express their needs, feelings, and ideas by pointing to words or symbols, helping those with speech impairments or nonverbal to participate more fully in social interactions and activities, promoting a greater sense of inclusion and independence.
“We are incredibly grateful to MIBOR for their support, which will allow us to expand our efforts to make our recreational spaces more inclusive,” HCPR Director Chris Stice said. “Communication boards provide a valuable resource for those who may otherwise face challenges in expressing themselves. Our goal is to make sure everyone can enjoy and participate in all the wonderful amenities our parks have to offer.”
The installation of communication boards is just one part of HCPR’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility across its parks.
