Sheridan fought to the end in its Sectional 39 semifinal game with Tipton Thursday at Lapel, before the Blue Devils beat the Blackhawks 15-11.
Tipton came out swinging, with eight runs in the top of the first inning. Sheridan got a run back in the bottom of the first; Braelan Bochner scored on Chance Spencer’s RBI groundout.
The Blackhawks then put up three runs in the second inning to cut the Blue Devils’ lead to 8-4. Brayden Whisman got home on Gavin Schwerdtfeger’s RBI groundout, Caleb Alexander singled in Keegan Stout, then Bochner scored on a passed ball.
Tipton scored a run in the third inning, then added five runs in the fourth for a 14-4 lead. Sheridan came back again with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Oland and Schwerdtfeger scored when Spencer reached on an error, then Dayne Voege singled in Spencer. Jacob Hall got his turn, batting in Voege with a left field hit. Stout later singled Hall home, getting the ‘Hawks within 14-9.
Voege singled in another run in the fifth inning, sending Oland home to cut Tipton’s lead to 14-10. The Blue Devils scored a seventh-inning run to go up 15-10. Oland scored his third run of the game in the bottom of the seventh after Spencer reached on an error, but the Blue Devils held on to win.
Voege had three hits in the game. Alexander, Oland, Whisman and Stout all had two hits, with one of Stout’s hits a double. Stout pitched three innings, striking out four.
Sheridan finished its season 11-14.
