College students and recent graduates seeking an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives must submit their applications before the Oct. 31 deadline, according to area lawmakers.
House internships are paid positions during the legislative session lasting from January through April. While employed full-time at the Statehouse in Indianapolis, interns can develop valuable skills while working one-on-one with state legislators and staff.
“The Statehouse internship program gives students an inside look at how Indiana’s government operates and connects them with experts and leaders on issues that impact Hoosiers every day,” said State Rep. Tony Cook (R-Cicero). “Interns play an integral role on staff, helping lawmakers in committee hearings and during the legislative session.”
College sophomores, juniors and seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors are eligible to apply. Internship positions are available in a variety of departments including legislative, communications and media relations, policy or fiscal policy.
“There are so many talented college students from Hamilton County who would excel at the Statehouse as an intern,” said State Rep. Kathy Kreag Richardson (R-Noblesville). “With numerous leaders beginning their careers as interns, this opportunity is one that young people should wholeheartedly consider.”
“Interns are placed with staff based on their interests, strengths and career goals,” said State Rep. Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel). “The House internship program is a great way to gain strong work habits and build a professional network before getting their first job.”
When applying, students must also submit an official transcript, resume and two letters of recommendation.
“Internships are an important part of the college experience and provide students the chance to build on what they have learned in the classroom,” said State Rep. Jerry Torr (R-Carmel). “With the House Republican internship application deadline approaching, students should apply today to get the most out of this opportunity.”
