After last week’s tight showdown at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, another battle was expected between Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers at the Hamilton County girls track and field meet, which took place Tuesday at Carmel Stadium.
While it was another close one, the defending state champion Royals prevailed again, winning the championship with 145 points. The Tigers scored 132.
Southeastern won six events at the meet, which also allowed the Royals and other teams to get things fine-tuned before the sectional, which HSE will host next Tuesday.
“Most things went pretty well,” said Southeastern coach Julie Alano. “We were trying some things, and we have some really tough decisions to make before the entry is due tomorrow. This is only our second meet where we’ve done trials and finals, so making sure who can handle what with those events. We weren’t able to do that with everybody; we had a couple injury issues and things that, we were going to go safe tonight instead of pushing it.”
Senior Tierra Sydnor led the Royals with three event wins. Sydnor was first in the 400 dash and long jump, then joined Olivia Burgess, Mya Hammons and Alyssa Barker in winning the 4×100 relay. Burgess and Hammons also were part of the first-place 4×400 relay, joining Lauren Johnson and Kinsey Ewing. Maddie Mirro was first in the 800 run and Lulu Black dominated the 3200 run, winning that race by 37 seconds.
Fishers had three event wins. Two of them came from Ella Scally, a freshman who earned the high-point trophy at the end of the meet. Scally won both the 100 and 200 dashes, finished second in the long jump and was part of the Tigers’ runner-up 4×100 relay (with Grace May, Gabby Lewis and Myah Donaldson). Katie Folta finished first in the 300 hurdles. Arianna Kelley was second, giving Fishers a 1-2 finish.
“We had a couple areas where we didn’t score as well as we hoped, but really overall, had a lot of great performances tonight, obviously led by Ella’s 30 points, which is incredible,” said Tigers coach Andrew Belloli.
Carmel won two events. The Greyhounds opened the meet with a win in the 4×800 relay from Mahalet Zeruesenay, Emily Hand, Martha Hunter and Annie Christie), then Phoebe Bates finished first in the 1600 run. As a team, Carmel placed third with 105.5 points.
Noblesville was a strong fourth, scoring 101.5 points. Shelby Tyler had another remarkable performance, first setting a new meet record in the high jump of 5 feet, 11 inches. Tyler also won the pole vault.
Westfield scored 66 points as a team. Zoe Pentecost led the way, sweeping the throwing events with comfortable wins in the shot put and the discus.
Hamilton Heights was sixth, with Kelsey Smith placing second in the high jump. Guerin Catholic took seventh; Emily Zlatniski was third in the 400 dash.
