Hamilton Heights star Gus Etchison announced on Friday that he has committed to play basketball at Western Michigan University.
Etchison made the announcement on his Twitter account in the form of a minute-long video. He began by thanking his family, coaches and teammates, then revealed that he had chosen Western Michigan.
“After a long talk with my family and God, I’d like to continue my father’s legacy at Western Michigan University,” said Etchison. “I’m honored to become a Bronco.”
Etchison was Hamilton County’s leading scorer in the 2019-20 season, averaging 24.9 points per game for his junior year. He had solid numbers across the board, with 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. Etchison scored 41 points in the Huskies’ season-opening game, an overtime win against Lebanon, then set a new Heights school record on Dec. 11 by scoring 56 points in the Huskies’ game with Mount Vernon.
Western Michigan is located in Kalamazoo, and plays in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The Broncos are coming off a 13-19 season with a relatively young team; only two seniors were on the roster this past season. Western Michigan will have a new coach this coming season: Clayton Bates was hired in March after several years as a Broncos assistant coach.
