Carmel girls grab home hoops win over PIke
The Carmel girls basketball team has been searching all season to find its identity and it just might be that if it’s a balanced effort, the Greyhounds will surely find themselves competing at a high level, no matter the opponent.
That was the case when they hosted Pike on Friday. The ‘Hounds were able to put together their fourth win of the season with a two-point home win over the Red Devils, 54-52.
The two former MIC foes were tied after one period by the count of 12-12 and Pike would snag a slight edge at halftime, 22-21.
Carmel came out firing in the third to outscore the Pike, 23-19 to go up three through three, 44-41.
Pike fought back with an 11-10 fourth, but the host ‘Hounds held tight for a 54-52 home win.
It was a completely balanced effort that fueled the Greyhounds’ win.
Mallory Bourquein led the ‘Hounds with 13 points and was joined in double-figures by Mackenzie Woods with 10 points to go with five rebounds.
Hannah Lach pitched in with nine, Keaton Gatlin had seven and Taryn Fisher added six.
Carmel (4-16) closes out the regular season on Jan. 24 at Cathedral and then visits Ben Davis on Jan. 27.
No. 11 Greyhounds boys narrowly escape Pike with win
When Carmel headed to the west side of Indy to face the Pike Red Devils, the Greyhounds expected nothing less than a close game from start to finish.
The ‘Hounds found ways to get the win in a bookend victory on the road, 52-49.
Carmel got out to a 9-7 lead through the first frame, but the Greyhounds knew it would simply be the kind of game it usually is with their former MIC rival and that surely held true.
After a 12-12 second period, Carmel clinged to a 21-19 lead at the halftime break.
The two went neck-and-neck in the third, matching each other 13-13, but that still gave Carmel a two-point advantage, 34-32.
It would be a higher scoring fourth quarter with the ‘Hounds finding a way to outlast the Red Devils 18-17 on their way to a 52-49 win.
Sam Orme paced the Greyhounds with a double-double, tallying 15 points and 12 boards.
Alex Couto was right behind Orme with 13 points, while Spencer White had a productive outing with 10 points and eight rebounds. Jared Bonds chipped in eight points and three assists.
Carmel (10-5) finishes their weekend at home when it hosts No. 3 Brownsburg (15-1). The Bulldogs took down Westfield on the road last night, 62-51.
