Golf: ‘Rocks take runner-up at Hall of Fame

Five Hamilton County golf teams participated in the Hall of Fame Classic, which took place Saturday at The Golf Club at Eagle Pointe.
Westfield earned the runner-up position, edging out third-place Carmel. Both teams finished with team scores of 305; the Shamrocks took second on the fifth-woman score.
Sam Brown and Sophie McGinnis each carded 72s for Westfield. Brown made an eagle on the 18th hole and had two birdies, while McGinnis drained three birdies. Addi Kooi had two birdies and Brette Hanavan made one.
“I’m really proud of how the girls battled today, said Shamrocks coach Trevor Neu. “We were on a course that we weren’t familiar with and the girls did a good job of navigating through it today. It was also extremely hot, so I was glad to see how mentally tough the girls were today.”
The Greyhounds’ Michaela Headlee had an outstanding round, scoring a three-under par 68 to finish as the individual runner-up. Headlee eagled hole No. 9 and had two birdies as well. Ava Nguyen also eagled No. 18 and made two birdies. Ava Hedrick’s round of 73 included four birdies, while Claire Swathwood had one birdie.
“I was so proud of the girls because they had to dig deep just to stay mentally focused given the conditions,” said Carmel coach Kelly Kluesner. “We definitely had some holes that presented challenges but the girls rebounded well making pars and birdies and just playing their own game.”
