The annual Bishop’s Cup basketball doubleheader between Guerin Catholic and Lafayette Central Catholic ended in a split decision Friday at the Eagles Nest.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles girls dropped a close game to the Class 1A No. 3 Knights, 40-36. Central Catholic led 11-7 after the first quarter and 25-16 at halftime. Kathryn Loso kept Guerin Catholic within shouting distance by scoring 13 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles chipped away at the lead in the second half, getting within 31-26 after three quarters, but LCC was able to hang on in the fourth.
Loso finished with 17 points, while Natalie Fernandez scored 11 points, including nine in the second half.
The Guerin Catholic boys won their game, beating the Knights 56-39 in their Senior Night game. The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start, leading 20-14 after the first quarter, then cruising through the second period to take a 39-25 lead at halftime.
Will Grissom scored 12 points for Guerin Catholic, while Patrick Baird added 10 points. Nine different Golden Eagles players scored. Grissom and Jack Cherry both collected rebounds, while Baird pulled five. Grissom also handed out six assists.
The Guerin Catholic girls finished the regular season 12-10 and will host Class 3A Sectional 27 next week. The Golden Eagles play Shortridge in the first game of the sectional on Tuesday.
The Guerin Catholic boys are 10-6, having won their last four games. The Golden Eagles play this afternoon at Noblesville in an all-county game.
