Golden Eagles show off skill in solid start to season

Guerin Catholic got a solid win at the Eagles Nest to begin its season, taking care of McCutcheon 36-17.

The Mavericks scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles jumped ahead in the second period with two scores for a 15-7 halftime lead. Jack Linden got the first touchdown right at the midpoint of the quarter on a two-yard run, then Hayden Cler made a two-point conversion run to push Guerin Catholic ahead. A minute later, Quentin Klee took a 30-yard interception into the end zone.

Golden Eagles quarterback Malcolm Houze got going in the second half with three touchdown throws. Houze made a nine-yard TD pass to Aiden Horn late in the third quarter, then threw a 45-yard pass to Cler with 8:50 left in the fourth.

Houze made one more scoring throw late in the fourth, a 14-yard touchdown to Trevor Macey. He finished 14-of-25 with 172 yards, with Cler catching four of those passes. Nick Wilson was 4-for-4 on extra-point kicks.

Guerin Catholic plays next week at Lebanon.
