Guerin Catholic picked up two run-rule wins before taking its first loss of the season this past weekend.
On Friday, April 17, the Class 3A No. 2 Golden Eagles zoomed past Alexandria 15-1 in five innings. Guerin Catholic scored nine runs in the second inning and sailed to victory from there.
Grant Beard hit a grand slam during the second inning, this after being a part of a three-run home run from Brody Cain earlier in the inning. Karson Smith and Ben Canada both hit one double.
Smith and Cain both got two hits, with Smith driving in three runs. Jayce Cunningham pitched four innings for the win, striking out three and allowing just one hit. Will Countryman threw the fifth inning, striking out two.
The Golden Eagles played two games at Zionsville on Saturday, April 18. In its first game, GC cruised past the host and 4A No. 8 Eagles 13-3 in six innings, putting up six runs in the first inning.
It was Tate Troxell’s turn to hit a grand slam, which he did during that big first inning. Carson Kail also hit a homer, one of his two hits. Ian Taylor, Smith and Canada all hit one double. Canada and Liam Zorger both had two hits.
Harrison Haq got the win, tossing five strikeouts in five innings. Tyler Larsh pitched a perfect sixth inning to close the game.
Guerin Catholic dropped its first game of the season later at Zionsville, falling to 4A No. 9 Homestead 7-3.
The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, but GC answered with three runs in the top of the second. Troxell hit a one-out double and was brought home by Cain’s RBI groundout. Nolan Ratcliff singled in Zorger, then Canada’s left field hit scored Ratcliff.
The Golden Eagles led 3-1, but Homestead tied the game with runs in the third and fourth inning. A four-run fifth inning from the Spartans was the difference.
Kail was 3-for-3 at the plate, while Canada had two hits.
Guerin Catholic is 10-1-1 and begins a Circle City Conference series with Brebeuf Jesuit tonight at the Braves’ field.
