The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel offers the following opportunities for educational experiences.

Free matinees designed for school groups

Once again this season, the Center is offering free 60-minute matinee performances and presentations designed to enlighten and entertain local schoolkids. The 10:30 a.m. events are suitable for students from upper elementary grades through high school, and this season’s attractions include:

  • 5 – Animaniacs: In Concert, featuring the musical director and voice talents from the original cartoon series performing and sharing behind-the-scenes stories about the creative process
  • 18, 2024 – Keep Marching: The Road to the March on Washington, an original one-act play with music, exploring the historic 1963 civil rights march
  • April 19, 2024 – Sammy Miller and The Congregation, a witty, theatrical jazz ensemble from New York City

Learn more about student matinees here or drop an email to SchoolPrograms@TheCenterPresents.org.

On a related note: These days, the cost of booking vehicles and drivers can be a hurdle for educators considering field trips for their students. To address that concern, the Center has established the Transportation Grant Program, which invites schools and homeschool groups to apply for reimbursement of their travel costs. (Needless to say, donations to the Transportation Grant Program and the Center’s educational programs are always welcome.)

Michelle Marti will bring sea-themed songs and activities for young children to the Center for the Performing Arts starting Sept. 8. (Photo provided)

Watery fun for wee ones

Well, not actual water, but songs and activities inspired by sea and sun are the focus of the next Child & Adult Music Class for ages 18 months to five years. Led by musician/educator Michelle Marti, Row Your Boat runs Fridays from Sept. 8 through Oct. 6, with a choice of sessions at 9:30 or 10:45 a.m.

The cost is just $65 for all five sessions, presented in partnership with Westfield Veterinary Care. Dive in and learn more.

A journey driven by dance

Born in Puerto Rico to a Cuban mother and an Ecuadorian father, Mónica M. Muñoz has a unique cultural heritage that has informed her career as a professional dancer, teacher, choreographer, and director, as well as her eventual decision to settle in Indianapolis.

For the Sept. 26 installment of Luminaries, the Center’s weekday speaker series, Muñoz – Executive Director of Indianapolis-based Kids Dance Outreach – will share photos, videos and stories tracing that journey. Admission is only $10, which includes light refreshments. Get your Luminaries tickets here.

They call it the universal language

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Center’s next Peanut Butter & Jam session for kids ages 1-7 features Musical Conexion, the brainchild of musicians Cote Godoy of Chile and Kelsi Lee of Indiana. In a fun-filled, bilingual cultural experience designed for both Spanish-speaking and non-Spanish-speaking families alike, the duo performs songs, movements and finger plays in Spanish and English accompanied by instruments like guitar and cajón peruano.

Tickets are only $10 per child, which includes up to two free adult admissions. Make your musical connection here.
