No. 3-ranked Westfield, which qualified for the state finals last season for the first time in school history, won all five matches in straight sets, improving to 3-0 in Hoosier Crossroads Conference play. Freshman Alexandra Grilliot won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while No. 2 doubles Isla Harvey and Ellen Volz also got a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
No. 1 doubles Jenna Berry and Bella Rivera won their match 6-0, 6-3. No. 2 singles Juliette Grilliot got a challenge from the Royals’ Summer Wolf before winning 6-2, 6-3. No. 3 singles Addi Kooi also battled HSE’s Evelyn Hiner, but won 6-2, 6-2.
Shamrocks coach Trudy Coler said the early season is “going well” and that her team is “still trying to work through some lineups.” Westfield is 3-1 for the season, with its only loss to No. 1 Carmel. The Shamrocks’ other wins have come against No. 14 Avon and No. 28 Brownsburg.
The ‘Rocks have another tough match Thursday, when they travel to No. 5 Zionsville for another HCC dual meet.
“We’re just taking one match at a time,” said Coler. “We’re just working on our games and working on getting better and better at every court and keeping that all into perspective. We have a lot of goals as a team, but we’re just taking one goal at a time.”
Southeastern is 1-3 for the season. The Royals began the year with a loss to Zionsville, then beat Franklin Central in an HCC dual meet. On Monday, HSE fell to No. 25 North Central 4-1; senior Evelyn Hiner got the Royals’ victory.
Southeastern coach Doug Gernert said there are three things his team wants to be known for: “The way we support each other, the sportsmanship that we demonstrate when we’re out there, and our toughness, that we never quit.” As Gernert pointed out: “You have to win the last point, and we’re going to make you win that last point with us every time.”
The Royals host Noblesville on Thursday and travel to the Park Tudor Invitational on Saturday.
