The IHSAA swimming post-season got underway Thursday with the girls sectional preliminaries.
At Noblesville, 31-time defending state champion Carmel got its tournament off to a good state, qualifying all 27 of its swims for the championship heat of the Saturday sectional finals. The Greyhounds earned the outright top seed in 10 events, and tied for first in another.
Kelly Pash is seeded first in the 200 and 100 freestyles, while Trude Rothrock is No. 1 in the individual medley and the butterfly. Other Carmel first seeds are Alyssa Conley in the 50 free, Katie Dougherty in the 500 free, Grace Estabrook in the breaststroke, and Colleen Duffy, who shares the top seed in the backstroke with Westfield’s Katherine Hand. The ‘Hounds are also the first seed in all three relays.
Noblesville also advanced everyone over to Saturday, placing 21 swims in the championship heat and the other six in the consolation heat. The Millers are seeded second in both the medley and 200 free relays; the all-freshman team of Jordan Cooley, Sammy Huff, Caitlin Marshall and Abby Harvey swam the medley.
Hand was one of the leaders for Westfield, which also qualified all 27 of their swims. The Shamrocks sent 15 swims into the championship heat and 12 into the consols. Hand also earned the third seed in the IM and the fourth seed in the butterfly, with Erin Verbrugge the fifth seed in the 200 free. Westfield’s 200 and 400 free relays each are seeded fourth, with Riley Howe and Lauren Rowe swimming on both relays.
Hamilton Heights qualified eight swims for the championship heat and eight more for the consolation heat. The Huskies 400 free relay team of Claire Sloderbeck, Tara Holder, Ryleigh Poe and Rachel Sanqunetti earned the second seed, while the same group broke the school record in the medley relay, finishing in a new time of 1:52.92 and earning the third seed. Sanqunetti’s backstroke time of 58.82 set another school record and gave her the fifth seed.
Guerin Catholic qualified all three of its relays for the championship heat, with eight individuals advancing to the consolations. Both the medley and 200 free relays earned the sixth seed; Mary Cline and Danielle Hunckler swam on both.
Over at the Hamilton Southeastern sectional, both the Royals and Fishers sent all 27 swims on to the Saturday finals. Both schools qualified 26 swims into the championship heat, with a 27th swim in the consolation heat.
Southeastern will have top seeds in the finals: Emily Barnes in the 50 free, Abby Harter in the backstroke and Madison Kertin in the breaststroke. The Royals also took the top seed in the 200 and 400 free relays.
The Tigers picked up three individual top seeds. Abigail Jahns will be No. 1 in the 200 free, Kara Robeson is seeded first in the butterfly and Morgan Booth is the top seed in the 500 free.
University competed in the Zionsville sectional. The Trailblazers’ 400 free relay team of Charlotte Kumler, Regan Hooker, Macy Paton and Caitlin Clark will swim in the championship heat after earning the seventh seed. University will also have four swims in the consolation heat.
Complete results now follow.
Positions 1-8 qualify for championship heats, positions 9-16 qualify for consolation heats, positions 17-18 are alternates.
