Girls soccer: Huskies upset Western Boone

The Hamilton Heights girls soccer team scored an upset in its opening game, beating 1A No. 4 Western Boone 6-2 on Monday.
“Thinned out by early season injuries, the team stepped up and played a solid opener on the road,” said Huskies coach Travis Kauffman. “The team controlled the ball well in the middle of the field and created multiple opportunities on offense.”
Lauren Stirn and Elaina Page both netted two goals for the Huskies, with Emily Stirn and Maria Mitchell each adding one. Madi Hasler offered up two assists while Page and Makena Trew had one each.
Tessa Harr made nine saves as the Heights goalkeeper.
“The defense, while allowing the goals, adjusted well to the speed and attacks of Western Boone’s forwards,” said Kauffman.

Hamilton Southeastern dominated its first game of the season, beating Lawrence North 7-0 on Monday.
It took until the halfway point of the first half for the Class 3A No. 8 Royals to break through, but they finally did when Layla Brown scored in the 20th minute, with Taylor Pozzebon providing the assist. After that, the goals came fast and furious: Ava Keaffaber scored from Ellie Gerstner, Molly Harris put one in the net courtesy of Nathalie McLeish, and Brown got a second goal with 2:25 left in the half, with Keaffaber assisting.
Southeastern added three more goals in the second half. Claire Wilkinson scored off Keaffaber in the 46th minute, then Izzie Wallace assisted two goals within 10 minutes: Katie Reed scored first, then Pozzebon found the back of the net.
The Royals defense allowed just one shot, and none on goal. Chloe Banning and Allison Ellis combined for the shutout.

Noblesville began its season with a win on the road, getting a 1-0 victory over Cathedral Monday at the Lawrence Soccer Complex.
Jewell Hensley got the winning goal for the 3A No. 10 Millers in the second half. Noblesville outshot the Irish 7-5, and Amanda Carmosino recorded her first win as a varsity goalkeeper, making four saves.
The Millers will play their home opener at 7 p.m. tonight against Brebeuf Jesuit, which is ranked No. 2 in 3A.

Sheridan, ranked No. 18 in 1A, dropped its opening game to Rossville 7-2 on Tuesday.
The Blackhawks started with only 11 eligible players, and an injury forced them to play with 10. The Hornets scored first, but Sheridan’s Ashton Wilson scored a goal to tie the game.
Rossville led 4-1 at halftime, but the ‘Hawks battled through the second half. Goalkeeper Nixon Williams made 18 saves in the game, many times in one-on-one situations. Defender Lilli Barker scored Sheridan’s second goal, dribbling past several Hornets defenders to get her first career goal.
“While all of the girls played extremely hard on Tuesday, the player of the game honors go to sophomore Makaela Mosolf,” said Blackhawks coach Kurt Olsan. “Makaela was moved into a new position during the game and performed very well all game.”
