Girls basketball: Tigers, Royals split with tough Fort Wayne teams

Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern both played two tough teams in Fort Wayne Tuesday as part of a classic.
FISHERS GAMES
First, the Class 4A No. 6 Tigers took on Homestead, where they fell 51-35. The Spartans jumped out to an 11-0 lead; Fishers was able to cut that advantage to 19-11 by the end of the first quarter, but Homestead ran out to a 33-19 halftime advantage and led 47-26 after three periods.
Joirdyn Smith and Morgan Roberts both had seven points for the Tigers.
Fishers came back in its second game and beat Carroll 57-54. The Tigers led 15-12 after the first quarter before the Chargers took a 27-24 halftime lead. But Fishers cut that advantage to 38-37 by the end of the third, and scored 20 points in the fourth to get the win.
Joirdyn Smith helped out with nine second-half points, including seven in the fourth period. Alycia Triplett led the Tigers with 10 points, followed by Ava Carter and Olivia Smith with eight each.
Fishers is 11-3 for the season and is off until Dec. 30 when it plays at Frankton.

SOUTHEASTERN GAMES
In their first game, the Royals beat Carroll 43-38. Southeastern led 14-7 after the first quarter and 25-14 at halftime. Seven different players scored for Southeastern, with Maya Makalusky adding five points and Makayla Hinshaw going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The Chargers slowly came back during the second half, but the Royals were able to hold them off.
Makalusky finished the game with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Zoe Bolding had eight points and led the rebounds with six, while Hinshaw contributed eight points, four steals and four assists. Olivia Brown also dished out four assists.
In its second game, Southeastern was edged out by Homestead 58-56. The Royals were up 17-10 after the first quarter and led 24-17 in the second before the Spartans went on a 15-0 run to finish the first half. Homestead led 32-24 at the break, but Southeastern fought back to take a lead early in the fourth quarter. The Spartans’ Ayana Patterson made a three-point play with just over a minute to go to get her team back in front and eventually win.
Maya Makalusky drained five 3s on her way to 21 points, followed by Riley Makalusky with 16 points. Brown earned a double-double of 10 points and 10 assists, in addition to seven rebounds and four steals. Bolding had four blocked shots.
“Good overall day as team is progressing,” said HSE coach Brian Satterfield. “We still have a few items to iron out.”
The Royals are 8-6 and play next week at North Central’s Paul Loggan Memorial Invitational. Southeastern plays Bloomington North at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 and Gibson Southern at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29.
