Guerin Catholic began play in the Ray Furney Holiday Classic at Lawrenceburg on Friday by winning both of its games in Pool “A.”
The Class 3A No. 3 Golden Eagles first beat Bethesda Christian 70-58. A strong first quarter propelled Guerin Catholic to a 26-17 lead, which the Golden Eagles extended to a 44-28 halftime advantage. Guerin Catholic kept its lead around that margin in the second half.
Four GC players reached double digits. Robert Sorensen scored 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers along the way. Bryson Cardinal scored 13 points, in addition to getting six rebounds and handing out five assists. Dylan Murans and Malcolm Houze both scored 12 points, with Murans collecting five rebounds.
Guerin Catholic beat host Lawrenceburg 53-33 in its second pool game. The Golden Eagles led from the start, going up 17-6 after one quarter. Guerin Catholic extended its lead to 35-17 by halftime.
Andy Caron scored 14 points, followed by Sorensen with 13. Cardinal had six rebounds with Sorensen grabbing five. Houze dished out four assists.
The Golden Eagles are 9-2 and play Newport (Ky.) at 11:30 a.m. in the semifinals. A placement game follows later that night.
