GC girls, Carmel girls, & Westfield boys teams start season with victories

The Guerin Catholic girls lacrosse team began its 2024 season with two victories in Evansville last Saturday.

The defending Class 2A state champion Golden Eagles started with an 8-2 win over Evansville North. Gabby Deer and Alex Soucie each scored two goals, followed by one apiece from Katherine Constantino, Jane Cline, Avery Wilson and Caroline Ford. Deer also picked up three ground balls. Goalkeeper Ruth Abdalla made four saves.

Guerin Catholic followed that with a 14-2 win over Evansville Memorial. Deer put in four goals, with Soucie scoring three and Lucy Esposito netting two. Also scoring goals were Claire Flannagan, Camryn Carter, Cline, Sophia Adolay and Ford. Abdalla made three saves and Audrey Papay had two.

Carmel’s girls lacrosse team, the 2023 2A state runner-up, opened its season with two wins over the past few days.

Last Saturday, the Greyhounds beat Louisville Sacred Heart 14-6. Sophie Mock scored six goals, with Breckin Hare putting in five goals and handing out three assists. Goals by Riley Putnam, Elizabeth Tomalia and Avery Goehl rounded out the Carmel scoring.

Ella Pacilio and Goehl both made two assists, with Mock and Tomalia both dishing out one. Brookelyn Jenkins made two saves.

The Greyhounds beat Westfield 15-6 on Monday. Stats from that game will appear in a later edition.

The Westfield boys lacrosse team began its season Tuesday with a 19-6 win over Heritage Christian.

Sam Meyers scored five goals for the Shamrocks, with Owen Foreman and Theo Dager both netting four. Zach Lunsford, Keegan Krupp and Lucas Smaagaard all added two goals. Foreman dished out four assists, Meyers handed out two, while Jackson Gilbert, Lunsford, Smaagaard and Evan Kondrat each had one.

Lunsford picked up five ground balls, followed by Hunter Jones with four and Dager with three. Spencer Ellis had four saves in goal, with Hayden Buck making three saves.
