GC frustrated by Richmond

Guerin Catholic was dealt a frustrating loss by Richmond Saturday night, falling 62-56 in boys basketball action at the Eagles Nest.
Drew Thieme drilled a 65-foot shot at the first quarter horn to give the Golden Eagles an 18-12 lead. Zach Munson then opened the second quarter with a 3-point field goal for what would be Guerin Catholic’s largest lead of the night at 21-12. But 11 points in the second quarter by Richmond guard Christian Harvey, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, cut the Golden Eagles lead by halftime to 28-26.
The 4A Red Devils came out on fire to start the third quarter, starting the half on a 10-2 run to go ahead 36-30. Richmond would stay on top until Kian Sills’ 3-point field goal tied the score at 42-all as the action headed into the final stanza.
Bernie McGuinness gave Guerin Catholic (9-7) their largest lead in the fourth quarter 48-45. Harvey and Richmond though roared back to take a 52-48 lead. The Golden Eagles had several shots at tying the score after that, but could not make a clutch basket down the stretch, and they had no answer for Harvey all night.
Richmond shot 55 percent from the field in the second half, while GC connected on only 39.3 percent. Harvey had a brilliant night, making 12-17 field goal attempts and 9-12 at the free throw stripe on his way to 34 points. He also had eight assists and four steals. “We could not stay in front of him,” said a dejected Pete Smith after the game. “He schooled us all night, and played one fabulous game.” Harvey was the only double-figure scorer for Richmond (6-10).
Jack Hansen, Sills, and Munson scored 17, 15, and 12 points, respectively, for the Golden Eagles, who had 12 turnovers in the game. Hansen was the only GC player to get to the free throw line all night against the extended zone Richmond played, connecting on 3-of-4. Meanwhile Richmond was 10-of-14.
“There were times we executed very well and got some good looks down the stretch but didn’t convert. And there were times we stood around the 3-point arc and watched whomever caught the ball in the paint try to shoot or pass it back it. It was a very disappointing loss for us.”
Next on the slate for Guerin Catholic is Lafayette Central Catholic Friday night in the annual Bishop’s Cup contest. The match-up of the two Lafayette Diocese’s high schools will take place in the Eagles Nest.
