Update #68 from Dr. Derek Arrowood, Superintendent, Hamilton Heights School Corporation.

Tomorrow marks the kickoff of this year’s Teach One to Lead One (T1L1) program at Hamilton Heights. It will be the third year this incredible mentoring program has been offered at the high school and the first year at the middle school. To date, some 160 students have completed and/or are participating in the program. T1L1, which reaches its 25-year mark next month, is a unique mentoring program that takes place in the classroom each week throughout the school year. It pairs community volunteers with teachers to lead students through 10 universal principles which include respect, integrity, self-control, courage, humility, excellence, compassion, enthusiasm, teamwork, and honor. Thank you, Kevin Yaney, President of the T1L1 Central Indiana Chapter, for championing this program at Heights. Click here to learn more about this mentoring program and its impact.

Speaking of making a difference, our food pantry will be open from 4 to 6 p.m. next Monday, Sept. 20 at the High School. Enter through Door A.

Last Saturday, two cool events took place at Hamilton Heights. The Indiana Ready Mix Concrete Association hosted its 12th annual Mixer Truck Rodeo in the high school parking lot. Eric Fisher, Project Lead the Way – CEA Master Teacher, took advantage of this by creating several competitive events for high school students to participate in including the VR Truck Simulation, Concrete Shoot, written exam about concrete, and a poster contest advertising the fundamentals of concrete mix for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade. It was an exciting hands-on event for the students to learn more about the skills involved in this industry as well as enjoy the opportunity to watch some of Indiana’s finest concrete professionals in action.

The other event was the induction of the Class of 2021 to the Hamilton Heights Athletic Hall of Fame, under the direction of Mitch Street, HHHS Hall of Fame Committee Chairman and Dean of Students. This year’s honorees included one team and four athletes: Ron Ackles ’62, Alicia Bundy ’96, Dennis Lockhart ’95, Rick McCoskey ’71, and the Hamilton Heights 2012 football team. Click here to watch this year’s ceremony and learn more about these deserving honorees.

This Saturday, two community events will be taking place that will make for a great day of celebrating and enjoying the place we call home. The 4Town Tour and 4Town Taste starts at 8:30 a.m. followed by the second annual Cicero Street Festival, where our award-winning band will kick off the festivities by playing the National Anthem beginning at 4 p.m.

These events give us a sense of normalcy and feeling of connectedness. They are part of what makes our community special. The HHSC family is honored to be a part of these festivities. With that said, it’s important to remember the times we are in and that these kinds of wonderful events can present additional challenges in exposure and transmission for COVID-19.

Even though we are still dealing with pandemic absences and quarantines, something that will be with us for a while, no one’s efforts to mitigate the risk of spreading COVID-19 can be complete unless the same efforts are taken at home and on weekends. Let’s continue to remain diligent so we do not dismantle the progress we are making in keeping our infection rate at manageable levels in our schools and throughout our community.
