Fast start sends Trailblazers to victory

University sprinted to a 12-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and rolled to a 77-28 victory over Traders Point Christian Academy Friday night.
Playing without three rotation players, the Trailblazers needed a fast start and got just that.  Natalie Nickless made a lay-in just five seconds in to the game off a feed from Brooke Andrus.  Making her first varsity start, freshman Haley Tomlinson made a steal and scored just 14 seconds in.  Nickless followed with a pair of three pointers and Lindsey Syrek added a basket for the quick 12-0 advantage.
The Knights scored their first basketball after a timeout, then University scored the next nine for a 19-2 lead before settling for a 26-10 lead after the first quarter.  The Blazers led 41-18 at the half before putting up 25 more points in the third quarter for a 66-22 lead.
All 12 players who dressed saw playing time and nine scored.  Syrek had 19 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots.  The sophomore has recorded a double-double in all five games this season.
Nickless drilled four three pointers on her way to 17 points.  Lily Snyder had 12 and Brooke Andrus had 11, including three triples.  Tomlinson added eight points.  Jaigh Sanders (four), Brooke Toombs (three) Elena Cacucci (two) and Elise Nachlis (one) rounded out the scoring.
University improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-4.  The Trailblazers are next in action Tuesday when they host Brebeuf Jesuit.
