Two Hamilton County wrestlers have advanced to the quarter-finals of the IHSAA state finals after first-round wins Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Westfield sophomore Carson Eldred got a 113-pound decision victory, beating Norwell junior Kade Zadylak 9-6. Eldred’s quarter-final opponent this morning will be another junior, Castle’s Devon Casebolt.
At 160 pounds, Carmel senior Jack Eiteljorge easily won his first-round match, taking care of Merrillville senior Malik Hoover 10-2 in a major decision. Eiteljorge will face another senior, Bishop Luers’ Chandler Woenker in the quarter-finals today.
Two more county wrestlers dropped their first-round matches. Carmel sophomore Brendan Mattingly lost at 120 pounds in an 11-2 major decision to Portage junior Brock Peele. Fishers senior Alexander Strueder, wrestling at 138 pounds, lost to Brownsburg senior Blake Mulkey by a 7-0 decision.
Quarter-final matches begin at 9:30 a.m. today, to be immediately followed by the semi-finals and wrestlebacks. The consolation matches will start at 5 p.m., with the championship matches at 7:30 p.m.
