Live at the Center: Okara Imani and The Call

After earning a music degree from Indiana University, singer-songwriter Okara Imani began making a name on the Indianapolis open-mic circuit in 2018 and soon was performing at such venues as the Jazz Kitchen and Square Cat Vinyl. She was a featured artist at Indy Arts Council’s 2020 Art & Soul festival and also appeared on WFYI’s Small Studio Sessions. Her new project is The Call, a band playing original songs in the neo soul and alternative R&B vein. More information is available at OkaraImani.com.

Stewart Copeland: Police Deranged for Orchestra

Stewart Copeland’s Police Deranged for Orchestra is a high-energy orchestral evening celebrating a career that has spanned more than four decades. Copeland is best known as the founder and drummer of the Police, as well as a seasoned and prolific composer in opera, ballet, and orchestral music. This production – featuring a 28-piece orchestra, three vocalists, and a rock trio with Copeland on drums – is packed with Police hits such as “Roxanne,” “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” and “Message in a Bottle.”

The Chapin Family Presents Harry Chapin at 80: A Retrospective
Friday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m.

Backed by the Harry Chapin Band, two generations of the musical Chapin Family will gather to bring the songs of the late Harry Chapin to life, including classics such as “Cat’s in the Cradle,” “Taxi,” “W.O.L.D.” and “Circle.” Backed by original band members Big John Wallace on bass and Howard Fields on drums, the performers include Tom Chapin, Steve Chapin, Jen Chapin, and the Chapin Sisters (Abigail and Lily), all award-winning artists with active careers and multiple recordings who just happen to be related and who love making music together.

Bill Frisell FIVE & Ambrose Akinmusire’s Owl Song
Saturday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.

Two of contemporary jazz’s greatest innovators team up for an evening of new sounds. Legendary guitarist Bill Frisell’s new band FIVE features four longtime collaborators: bassists Thomas Morgan and Tony Scherr and drummers Rudy Royston and Kenny Wollesen, all of whom have played with Frisell in various trio and duo combinations. Opening the night will be Owl Song, a trio led by Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire that features Frisell and drummer Herlin Riley.
