Donald Mendenhall, 99, passed away quietly on September 3, 2022. Born and raised in Sheridan, he was the son of John L. and Mary (Pickett) Mendenhall, both deceased. Don was a graduate of Sheridan High School, Class of 1942. He was a World War II Veteran and served his country honorably in the United States Army. Don served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.
On October 23, 1943, before shipping overseas, he married the love of his life, Roberta Mae (Cottingham) Mendenhall, who preceded him in death in 2016. They were married for over 72 years. They raised five children: Neil (Pamela) Mendenhall, Mark (Roberta) Mendenhall, Marcia (Allen) Pettigrew, Ann (Ronald) Granville, and Nancy (Mitchell) Cain. Don was a proud granddad to 12, great-granddad to 26, and great-great-granddad to seven.
When Don returned home from the service, he took a job with Chrysler in Indianapolis and farmed his family farm until retiring. Don was a member of UAW Local 1226 and was a 50+ year member of the Sheridan Fidelity Masonic Lodge 309.
Don and Roberta “Bobbie” enjoyed their monthly euchre club card games with their lifelong friends for 70 years. They spent many of their retirement years wintering in Florida. Don enjoyed woodworking and made some beautiful pieces of furniture. He was incredibly talented at making toys for his grandchildren.
Preceding Don in death was his wife, Roberta, in 2016; and his siblings, Louise Hines, Howard “Joe” Mendenhall, George Mendenhall, and Harold “Red” Mendenhall.
A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 9 at Crown View Cemetery located on State Road 38 in Sheridan, where interment will be. The Rev. John Meunier will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Crown Pointe Assisted Living, 610 Crown Pointe Drive, Lebanon, IN 46052; or Sheridan United Methodist Church, 207 E. 2nd St., Sheridan, IN 46069, in memory of Donald and Roberta (Bobbie) Mendenhall.
