The Yellow River Concerto is a celebrated classical work that skillfully blends Western classical forms with Chinese folk music traditions. It also blends instruments from different cultures, including the dizi, a Chinese transverse flute that is widely used in many genres of Chinese folk music, opera, as well as the modern orchestra.
In this video Carmel Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Principal Flutist Tammy Thweatt gives an introduction to the instrument and plays a selection from the concerto.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 you can hear the entire work and also enjoy Claude Debussy’s beloved “Clair de Lune” and “La Mer” during CSO’s Moonlight & Lanterns concert at The Palladium.
